Save the date! The Truchas Chapter of Trout Unlimited's Annual Banquet is on Saturday March 31st. This year; banquet will be at the Scottish Rite Temple (the big pink church downtown) at 463 Paseo de Peralta in Santa Fe. Door's open at 6:00 for cocktails and bidding on auction items with dinner and a featured presentation to follow. The cost is $50.00 per person. This year's featured speaker is April Volkey, a top steelhead guide on the Dean River in British Columbia.
The Valles Caldera National Preserve fishing program will not reopen for the 2012 Spring Season. They had hoped to reopen their fishing program on May 12, 2012, despite the damage from last year's Las Conchas Wildfire. A review of their stream monitoring program indicates the fishing program will need to remain closed until restoration efforts have been implemented. They do not anticipate these efforts to take more than a few months, but they cannot guarantee an opening date at this point. "We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to restore the quality fishing program we are known for. If you have already made fishing reservations for the 2012 season, you will be refunded by March 16, 2012. We apologize for the inconvenience, and encourage you to check out the other experiences offered on the Preserve."
The Fishing Program at Pecos National Historical Park resumes this Thursday March 8th. They are already taking reservations for the spring 2012 season at the Park. The first spring season runs from March 8th through April 9th. To take part in the fishing program, you can make advanced reservations for the two beats available per day (six anglers total) either by emailing the park at peco_visitor_information@nps.gov or by calling the reservation line at 505-757-7272. If those spots are filled for the day you seek, you can try showing up at the Visitor Center to see if there are spaces available on the third beat, which has three spots and is always reserved for walk-ins. In order to get a fishing permit at the Park, you must possess a valid New Mexico Department of Game and Fish (NMG&F) fishing license and Habitat Management and Access Validation.

Happy New Year and many thanks to all of you who have contributed to the success of the High Desert Angler. We are fortunate to have a clientel that supports small local businesses. Being in the business of fun, we feel very grateful to you all have spent your hard earned dollars with us. With the economy not having quite rebounded,, the fires we had over the summer and resulting forest closures, we realize that how lucky we are to be in this business and to serve the customers that keep us here. Please be safe this holiday season and we wish you all the best in the coming New Year.
The $300,000 fish habitat improvement project on the San Juan River below Navajo Dam concluded last week. The project was designed to enhance fishing opportunities in two ways: by reducing silt deposits from flash-flood events, and by creating deeper pools for fish during periods of low flow from Navajo Dam. Work in “The Braids,” has been very productive as fish have moved into this new habitat where they previously weren't. If you've been since the project was completed, please give me an e-mail and let me know.
