Forest Road 376 has been closed at Porter's Landing to NM Highway 126. FR 376 to the San Antonio Hot Springs is also closed. This means that the upper San Antonio and the Cebolla. Fenton Lake State Park is also closed. FR 376 is open from Gilman Tunnels to Porter's Landing. Highway 126 is now open but is subject to close again, along with other roads and areas affected by the fire as warranted by increased fire activity. An abandoned campfire is suspected in causing the Rio Fire in the Jemez Mountains. The entire East Fork starting just west of the Caldera, the lower San Antonio from La Cueva down, the Guadalupe, and the Jemez River are still open and fishing well.
Saturday June 5th is a Free Fishing Day at the Jicarilla Fishing Lakes. This day is also the Free Fishing Day for the State of New Mexico. The Jicarilla Apache Game and Fish Department is pleased to honor the same day and we encourage folks to get out and fish. The annual Spring River Cleanup on the Pecos will be on Saturday, June 26! Please meet us at the Upper Pecos Watershed Association office at 78 S. Main Street in Pecos at 9:00 am. Come get coffee, pastries and to your cleanup assignments. Bags, gloves and safety vests will be provided. We will be giving away stainless steel water bottles to all volunteers! The BBQ picnic will be at the Jamie Koch Pavilion following the cleanup at 12 noon. Pecos River BBQ Company will be doing the cooking (food will be donated)! We will also be having a bucket raffle with great prizes. If you have items you would like to donate for the bucket raffle, or would like more information please call the UPWA office at 757-3600 and speak to Rachel or Lexy.

No High Spring Peak Release this year on the San Juan River. The latest Water Supply Forecast for Water Year 2010 has been issued and the April through July inflow into Navajo Lake is forecasted to be at 89% of normal. Given this forecast, there will not be a spring peak release this year. It's a little unfortunate that the river won't see a scouring this year and flush out some of the accumulated sand and silt. The upside is that there shouldn't be a dip in business for the San Juan guides. The high spring release often keeps anglers away despite the fact that fishing is very good during the event.

Norman Maktima, head guide at the High Desert Angler, and Team USA member, has moved the classes on loch style stillwater flyfishing techniques. The new date for the stillwater class is on Saturday May 8th. The first day will be a three hour classroom day with the on the water follow up the next day Sunday May 9th. The cost of this class is $200. The time and place for the fishing class day will be TBA. The Saturday classroom day is from 9:00 am till noon. There are still some great deals on lots of stuff here at the fly shop. We have older styles of Cloudveil waders at incredible prices, Simms felt soled boots priced to move, and flies starting at 25 cents apiece! All of this is to make room for the new gear for this season. We are getting in more daily, so come check out the deals and what's new for 2010!

The cost of this class is $200 (a slight increase for this one to cover the extra costs of the boats). The time and place for the fishing class day will be TBA. Yes it's back and only in Santa Fe! We are offering Tai Chi Fly Fishing classes this spring. This spring we have made a few changes in how we are building the class. Jeff English and I have built 4 one hour sessions, all built around the principals of spiral energy and balance, that will build on each previous class, as well as be of value standing alone. As you may remember me saying last time, I have noticed a considerable personal growth in confidence in and on the water, as well as a more relaxed comportment after a full day of fishing. The four classes will be run on the four in April, 2-3 pm, indoors at Jeff English' studio. We plan to limit the class size to 6 - 10 people. Advance registration is required. The cost is $20.00 per session. To make reservations or for more information, please call Doug Brown at 505-660-9906, or the High Desert Angler at 505-988-7688.

Thanks to all who made it out to the Truchas Chapter of Trout Unlimited's annual banquet on Saturday April 10th. The Guest Speaker was Brian O'Keefe. If you've seen cover photos on Field & Stream; Outdoor Life; Fly Fisherman; Fly, Rod and Reel; Fly Fishing Salt Waters; Fly and Fish Magazine; Outside Magazine and Mens Journal, then you've probably seen some of Brian O'Keefe's work. The turn out was good and the funds raised will really help the Truchas Chapter with many of their programs.
