Dr. Scott Sparrow from the Kingfisher Inn will be in town on Friday December 18th to put on a slide show and video about the Laguna Madre of south Texas. Scott is an excellent photographer, an awesome captain and one heck of an author as well. Along with his photos and video he will be available for a book signing both before and after the show. We took a great group of anglers down to fish with Scott around the first of November and had a great time. All the Captains are superb on the fly and I would recommend Randy, Rick, Roel, and Scott to anyone headed to the Laguna Madre. I must admit, I love fishing for Redfish, especially in my home state of Texas, but fishing with Ed and all the guys who went down with us was really the highlight. We all caught fish and there were at least six Red Fish caught that pushed the 30” mark. Come on down around 5:00-5:30 mingle, eat, drink, buy a book from Scott and have him sign it. Healing the Fisher King is a really good book and will make a great gift for the angler in the family.

Just a heads up for anyone going to the San Juan River on Christmas Eve December 24th. As part of a cost saving plan for the State of New Mexico, state employees will be have to take some unpaid days off for the next few months. Unfortunately, that means that State Parks will be closed on some of the busiest three day weekends on some of the places we like to fish like Navajo Lake State Park (San Juan River below Navajo Dam is within the state park) and Villanueva State Park on the Pecos River. Governor Bill Richardson previously approved the alternative furlough plan for State Parks, but the plan had to be heard and approved by the State Personal Board. The Board approved the plan on Wednesday, December 16. In accordance with the furlough plan, New Mexico State Parks will not be open to the public on the following days:
• Thursday, December 24, 2009
• Friday, January 15, 2010
• Tuesday, February 9, 2010
• Tuesday, March 2, 2010
• Tuesday, March 23, 2010

State Parks will ropen the following day at 7:00 am. State parks will remain open on all holidays as usual, including Christmas, New Years Day, Martin Luther
King, Jr. Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Be careful if decide to go anyway, they have threatened to issue citations for trespassing.

The Big Move is done!! We are still polishing the new spot and thanks to all of you who came to lend a hand, we couldn’t have done it with out you! Just in case you didn’t hear, we are now directly across the street from the old location. The new address is 460 Cerrillos Road. We are the Cerrillos /Sandoval split now! I will be striping the parking lot soon, but you will see there is easy parking around the building from every side, come on down a check it out!! Please park at the new location, or at a meter on Sandoval. It is important that we make every effort not to park in the old lot behind the old location, thanks!

Tad Tucker, one of our full time guide staff would like to thank those individuals that made such a strong showing at this year's New Mexico Trout Fly Tying Symposium. Tad organized the group and with the support and creativity displayed by J.P., Mark, Jim M., Jim W., Marcos, Tom, Isaac, and Rick, this year's Symposium was one of the best yet. Thanks guys, your continued support for not only the High Desert Angler, but of organizations like New Mexico Trout is truly valued.

2010 Big Horn Dates: June 5-13!!!! I have been going to FT. Smith MT to fish the Big Horn River below the Yellow Tail Reservoir since June of 2000. I really like this time of year on the ‘Horn, first off the crowds are minimal, and our local rivers are still in run-off. This makes this trip the perfect primer for the up coming Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado season. Not to mention The Big Horn is quite possibly one of the top 5 tail waters on the planet. Out of 24 spots over the 8 days I will be there I know I only have 8 to 10 spots available. This is the kind of trip you want to do again and again and most of the returning anglers have been going with me since my second or third trip. So give a call for details and to sign up. The price stays the same, $1600 per person for four nights and three days of guided fishing. All meals, lodging and flies are included, you must get a MT fishing license and you have to get yourself there and back.

Winter Deals for you and yours!! I say it every year, “It may not be the best to give but it’s the best to get!!” I’m talking about Gift Cards no doubt, and it’s what the true angler really wants!!! After so many seasons with all of these anglers from all over the country and the world it is apparent that we as anglers are very picky about our equipment, and apparel. Sure, buy me a fishing shirt and I’ll wear it, even a Windstopper jacket, or a stocking cap with some new fingerless gloves. Those are great gifts, but what I really want is a new rod and reel, or a new pair of boots and waders. Maybe deep inside I am sick of the old vest and I am ready for one of those killer new fanny packs!! This is what the angler on your list is thinking. My point is only that these are things I have got to make my own decision on, and I need to cast it or feel it or stuff boxes in it to see how it works, maybe try it all on so I know it fits and the boots feel right. This friends, is where the gift card shines. This is the gift that’s sure to be a favorite. Let the angler on your list remain as picky as a San Juan Rainbow, after all, it’s our nature. There are still quite a few discontinued items, and all are marked down from 20% to over 60% off. Come see the new store and take advantage of these offers!!! See you here or on the water!!!
