The $300,000 fish habitat improvement project on the San Juan River below Navajo Dam that began on Monday October 31st should conclude next week. The project is designed to enhance fishing opportunities in two ways: by reducing silt deposits from flash-flood events, and by creating deeper pools for fish during periods of low flow from Navajo Dam. The project will include sediment removal and control at the mouth of Rex Smith Wash. Also there will be some habitat improvement work in “The Braids,” a section of the river above Texas Hole and the Kiddie Hole where water levels drop to very low levels during times of low flow from the dam. It will include digging holes in the sandstone riverbed to create deeper pools for trout. Work in “The Braids,” however, will require the area to be closed to fishing for about 30 days in November and early December. You can get more information at http://www.fishthesanjuan.com/phpBB2/.

The Truchas Chapter of Trout Unlimited is having their annual Christmas Party on Friday December 8th at the Cow Girl Hall of Fame in Santa Fe. The party runs from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm. There will be a featured speaker, Rebecca Oertel, staff biologist from the Valles Caldera National Preserve. Rebecca will be giving a presentation on the Las Conchas Fire and post-fire environments on the VCNP.
