The $300,000 fish habitat improvement project on the San Juan River below Navajo Dam concluded last week. The project was designed to enhance fishing opportunities in two ways: by reducing silt deposits from flash-flood events, and by creating deeper pools for fish during periods of low flow from Navajo Dam. Work in “The Braids,” has been very productive as fish have moved into this new habitat where they previously weren't. If you've been since the project was completed, please give me an e-mail and let me know.

A $300,000 fish habitat improvement project is scheduled to begin Oct. 10 on the trophy trout waters of the San Juan River below Navajo Dam. The project is designed to enhance fishing opportunities in two ways: by reducing silt deposits from flash-flood events, and by creating deeper pools for fish during periods of low flow from Navajo Dam. The estimated completion date is Jan. 8. “We’re excited that we can respond to anglers’ requests and move forward with this project that will make the world-class fishing on the San Juan River even better,” said Jim McClintic, chairman of the State Game Commission. The project will include: sediment removal and control at the mouth of Rex Smith Wash. Flash-flood events carry silt into the river at that point, damaging trout habitat there and downstream. The project will include building a sediment retention pond that will slow the water flow during floods, catch sediment and redirect clean water back into the river. Habitat improvement work in “The Braids,” a section of the river above Texas Hole and the Kiddie Hole where water levels drop to very low levels during times of low flow from the dam. It will include digging holes in the sandstone riverbed to create deeper pools for trout. Structure such as large cottonwood trunks, big rocks and faux beaver dams will be strategically placed to redirect flows into the new pools. Work in “The Braids,” however, will require the area to be closed to fishing for about 30 days in November and early December. State funding will pay for most of the project, with some additional federal funds. The project was approved by the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, which controls the river operations; the State Parks Division, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The Valle Vidal is open. The Wheeler Peak area near Taos Ski Valley is a great place to backpack. Cooper's Ranch below El Vado dam is open to camping and fishing. So, be willing to try something different, you might just be glad you did!

New Mexico Department of Game and Fish properties/recreation sites within Pecos Canyon will reopen on Friday July 29th. Be aware that the surrounding national forest lands won't reopen until Saturday! These recreation sites include: Bert Clancey, Terrero, Jamie Koch, Mora River and Monastery Lake. Other Game and Fish properties scheduled to reopen tomorrow include the Rio de Los Pinos Fishing Area, the Red River Hatchery, Rio Chama Wildlife Area (access to the Chama River off of NM Highway 112), Cimarron Canyon State Park.

The Valles Caldera National Preserve has implemented Stage I Fire Restrictions. The visitor center is open and the Valles Caldera will resume normal summer activities excluding those which normally occur in the burned areas. The Las Conchas Fire area will remain in Stage III Fire Closures. The fishing programs on the Preserve remain suspended until further notice. Please call the Valles Caldera or visit their website at www.vallescaldera.gov for more information. The remainder of the Jemez Ranger District is open under stage I restrictions. Paliza Campground and Jemez Falls Campground will remain closed for fire suppression activities.

Effective July 22nd, the Carson National Forest has reopened the forest that had been closed under sstage III fire restrcitions. Please see the Carson National Forest website at http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/carson/for the details of Stage II. The Camino Real Ranger District has reopened. The other open waters are the Red River, Cabresto Lake, Hopewell Lake, the Rio Hondo, and the Valle Vidal.

As of this writing, some New Mexico State Parks will reopen. Hyde Memorial, Fenton Lake, Morphy Lake, Coyote Creek, and Cimarron Canyon State Parks are now open under stage II fire restrictions.

Cochiti Lake is also closed. US Army Corps of Engineers facilities at Cochiti Lake will remain closed through August 16th. The water quality at the lake was cited as one of the factors in keeping the lake closed. There has been a lot of ash runoff from the areas affected by the Las Conchas Fire entering the Rio Grande and into the lake. It is also being used as a water source to mop up the Las Conchas Fire and the campgrounds at the lake are being used to house the firefighters.

Currently, the BLM areas like Orilla Verde, Rio Grande Wild and Scenic Rivers, and Santa Cruz Lake are open have lifted all fire restrictions. Eagle's Nest Lake, Abiquiu Lake, El Vado Lake, Heron Lake, Navajo Lake, the San Juan River, and Jicarilla Nation Lakes are open.

Some good news. The Carson National Forest has opened up some of their Ranger Districts under Stage II fire restrictions. See the details below. As far as the Santa Fe National Forest goes, the rainfall we've had over the last two weeks has been too sporadic to affect fuel mosture levels for the forests to reopen. It will take more consistent and steady rains to mitigate our current fire danger of extreme. I will be in contact with forest service officials next week to find out when the closures might be lifted. I will post that information as soon as it becomes available. Please see the rest of our announcements page below for a list of what's closed and what is open. There are places to fish. Plan a little bit and venture someplace new. The Valle Vidal is open. The Wheeler Peak area near Taos Ski Valley is a great place to backpack. Cooper's Ranch below El Vado dam is open to camping and fishing. So, be willing to try something different, you might just be glad you did!

The Pecos National Historical Park is also closed to fishing. Please see their website for the details at http://www.nps.gov/peco/index.htm and click on "2011 Fishing Program". All campgrounds, day use picnic areas, and trails within the Jemez Ranger District, Espanola Ranger District, Pecos/Las Vegas Ranger District, Cuba Ranger District and the Valles Caldera National Preserve are closed. This include popular hilking trails around Santa Fe like Atalaya, Chamisa, and Winsor Trails, and also includes open space trails like Dorothy Stewart and Dale Ball trails. Property owners and their guests will continue to have access to private lands within the Forest. The Forest and Preserve will reopen to the public when sufficient precipitation is received to adequately reduce extremely dry conditions and reduce the risk of wildfire to a manageable level.

Effective at 12:00 p.m., today, July 22, 2011, the Carson National Forest will enter into Stage 2 Fire Restrictions and open some parts of the forest that had been closed. These restrictions will remain in effect until further notice. Please see the Carson National Forest website at http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/carson/for the details of Stage II. The summer fishing season at Pecos National Historical Park begins June 23rd and extends until August 8th. To take part in our fishing program, you can make advanced reservations for the two beats available per day (six anglers total) by calling 505-757-7272, or if those spots are filled, show up at the Visitor Center on the day you'd like to fish to see if there are spaces available on the third beat, which is always reserved for walk-ins. In order to get a fishing permit at the Park, you must possess a valid New Mexico Department of Game and Fish (NMG&F) fishing license and Habitat Management and Access Validation.

The dates for the High Spring Peak Release out of Navajo Dam has been revised! The Bureau of Reclamation will begin to increase the release on Monday, June 6, 2011 at 1:00 AM, reaching 5,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) on Thursday, June 9th at approximately 3:00 PM. The release will stay at 5,000 cfs for seven days. On Wednesday, June 15th at approximately 7:00 AM, the release will begin to decrease, reaching 500 cfs on Friday, June 12th at approximately 10:00 PM, where it will remain until further notice. The release pattern, duration, and magnitude for the spring peak release follow the San Juan River Basin Recovery Implementation Program (SJRIP) Flow Recommendations for Endangered Fish. Adjustments may be made to the release if significant precipitation occurs during the scheduled release period. If you have any questions, or would like further information, please contact Ryan Christianson at 970-385-6590or e-mail him at rchristianson@usbr.gov. Fishing can be very good during the high release. Just be extra careful while wading and make sure to clean off any moss on you rig so the fish can see your flies.

The Spring Fishing progaram on the Valles Caldera National Preserve started Saturday May 21st. Jarrett and me and some good friends fished on Saturday. Save the date! Annual Pecos River cleanup is on Saturday June 4, 2011. I'll post the details next week.

The Spring Fishing progaram on the Valles Caldera National Preserve starts Saturday May 21st. There may be a chance to walk on on the opening day but I'd bet that most of the reaches are filled. You can still apply for other dates in their program by visiting their website at http://vallescaldera.gov/.

Very Important. House Bill 206 before the New Mexico legislature will abolish the state Game Commission and put the Department of Game and Fish under the Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department. All of these things could be very disasterous for fish and wildlife in New Mexico not to mention the adverse impacts on humters and anglers. The Game Commission holds regular hearings and meeting where the public has an opportunity to have their voices heard. As a division of Energy Minerals, and Natural Resources, the concern is that someone who may have a conflict of interest that heads this department could hold sway over our wildlife agency. In this day and age, we need all of the transparency we can get. The House Energy and Natural Resources Committe will be discussing this bill this Monday at 8:30 am at the State Capitol in room #315. Please e-mail or contact the members of the House Energy and Natural Resources Committee to voice your concerns! You can find those committee members at http://www.nmlegis.gov/lcs/committeedisplay.aspx?CommitteeCode=HENRC

The Fly Fishing Film Tour comes to New Mexico. Proceeds from the upcoming fly-fishing film festival will go to trout habitat improvements and other worthy projects on the state’s top angling attraction, the San Juan River below Navajo Dam, according to sponsors. The San Juan River is rated among the country’s top ten trout fisheries. But the river, one of state’s top tourism draws estimated to bring in up to $40 million a year, is in need of habitat and other improvement projects to benefit anglers and trout alike. Thus members of the angling community have come together to sponsor the fly-fishing film festival in March with shows in Albuquerque and Santa Fe and proceeds to fund future projects on the San Juan River. The first show will be on March 11th. Hotel Albuquerque in Old Town at 800 Rio Grande Blvd NW, will play host to the first showing sponsored by Charlie’s Sporting Goods and Los Pinos Fly Shop. Bob Gerding will be the emcee for the event. In Santa Fe, the film festival will be shown at the Lodge at Santa Fe, 750 North St. Francis Drive, on March 25 with High Desert Angler and The Reel Life fly shops sponsoring. TJ Trout of 94 Rock will emcee this showing. The doors opening at 5:30 p.m. and the show to begin at 7 p.m. Proceeds will go to projects on the San Juan River endorsed by New Mexico Trout, the Truchas Chapter of Trout Unlimited and the San Juan River Guide Association.

Proceeds from the upcoming fly-fishing film festival will go to trout habitat improvements and other worthy projects on the state’s top angling attraction, the San Juan River below Navajo Dam, according to sponsors. “The films are great, there’ll be fabulous raffle prizes and it’s a wonderful opportunity to show support for our beautiful San Juan River”, says Larry Johnson of the San Juan River Guide Association. The San Juan River in northwestern New Mexico draws thousands of fly-fishing enthusiasts to its waters each year for the opportunity to catch and release big trout and is consistently rated among the country’s top ten trout fisheries. Alot of price savvy shoppers know to buy skis in the summer and fishing gear in the winter. The fishing year has ended for many of the manufacturers we deal with. As a result, there are quite a few deals to be had on rods, waders, and wading boots. We are prevented from listing prices on boots right now, but we have many styles and prices to choose from. Please give us a call and we'll let you know what we got. Also check out Jarrett's List from our homepage.
