The summer fishing season at Pecos National Historical Park begins June 23rd and extends until August 8th. To take part in our fishing program, you can make advanced reservations for the two beats available per day (six anglers total) by calling 505-757-7272, or if those spots are filled, show up at the Visitor Center on the day you'd like to fish to see if there are spaces available on the third beat, which is always reserved for walk-ins. In order to get a fishing permit at the Park, you must possess a valid New Mexico Department of Game and Fish (NMG&F) fishing license and Habitat Management and Access Validation.
The dates for the High Spring Peak Release out of Navajo Dam has been revised! The Bureau of Reclamation will begin to increase the release on Monday, June 6, 2011 at 1:00 AM, reaching 5,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) on Thursday, June 9th at approximately 3:00 PM. The release will stay at 5,000 cfs for seven days. On Wednesday, June 15th at approximately 7:00 AM, the release will begin to decrease, reaching 500 cfs on Friday, June 12th at approximately 10:00 PM, where it will remain until further notice. The release pattern, duration, and magnitude for the spring peak release follow the San Juan River Basin Recovery Implementation Program (SJRIP) Flow Recommendations for Endangered Fish. Adjustments may be made to the release if significant precipitation occurs during the scheduled release period. Fishing can be very good during the high release. Just be extra careful while wading and make sure to clean off any moss on you rig so the fish can see your flies.
The Spring Fishing progaram on the Valles Caldera National Preserve started Saturday May 21st. Jarrett and me and some good friends fished on Saturday. It was a little windy but the place is beautiful and the fish were willing. Well worth the price of admission.
