Alot of price savvy shoppers know to buy skis in the summer and fishing gear in the winter. The fishing year has ended for many of the manufacturers we deal with. As a result, there are quite a few deals to be had on rods, waders, and wading boots. We are prevented from listing prices on boots right now, but we have many styles and prices to choose from. Please give us a call and we'll let you know what we got. Also check out Jarrett's List from our homepage.

It's that time of year again. Time for brown trout to spawn and make more fish! Please be ethical and leave the spawners alone. Often they'll be found over their redd, paired up and doing the deed. These fish are absolutely off limits! Some of the fish that aren't actively spawning are found close by and are still eating, These fish are OK to target, but please limit your wading and never wade through a redd. A redd is a circular area of clean gravel usually found in the tailout of pools and runs. Enjoy the fall fishing, just do it in a manner that you'll be able to sleep at night.

License-free fishing, archery and air rifle shooting are among activities scheduled Saturday, Sept. 25, at Fenton Lake State Park as the Department of Game and Fish and New Mexico State Parks celebrate National Hunting and Fishing Day with a day of family fun. National Hunting and Fishing Day also is a free fishing day in New Mexico, a special day when all anglers -- residents and nonresidents of all ages -- can fish without a license at public waters statewide. All other fishing rules apply. Sept. 25 activities at Fenton Lake will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will include free archery and air rifle shooting, fishing instruction, fly tying, aquatics education and more. Participants will be eligible for drawings for outdoor sports prizes. The state park charges a $5 per vehicle day-use fee. Walk-in entry is free. Fenton Lake State Park is 33 miles northwest of San Ysidro via N.M. 4 and N.M. 126 in the Jemez Mountains of northern New Mexico.

The Rio Costilla and Shuree Ponds on the Valle Vidal unit of the Carson National Forest opens Thursday July 1st. This area is truly a scenic gem for New Mexico. It's loaded with elk, bison, and turkey, but it usually draws people for the fishing. The Rio Costilla is one place you can reliably catch a Rio Grande Cutthroat and Shuree Ponds are known for it's large rainbows. The stream is dry fly fishing at it's best. High riding attractor like PMX's and Aerial Assault's, and yellow sallies and caddis flies work very well on those quick striking cutties. Take damsel nymphs and some aquatic snail patterns for the lunkers at Shuree. All of the streams in the Valle Vidal are no kill. The bag limit for Shuree is only 2 fish over 15 inches. Please report anyone breaking thes rules to New Mexico Game and Fish at 800-432-4263 or the Forest Service at 575-586-0520.

Thank you to all of the volunteers who contributed their time to the Spring River Cleanup on the Pecos on Saturday, June 26! I know that trash on the Pecos seems to be a constant problem. We all benefit from the efforts of the people who took a precious Saturday morning to make the river a nicer place to fish. There are many problems that affect our closest and best place to wet a line. Please, if you like to have this resource made better or utilize it despite it's woes, call the Forest Service, Game and Fish, New Mexico State Police, or heck, even Governor Richardson's office and voice your concerns. Groups like the Truchas Chapter of Trout Unlimited and the Upper Pecos Watershed Association need your help in highlighting the plight of the Pecos River. If you'd like more info on how you can help, contact the Upper Pecos Watershed Association at 78 S. Main Street in Pecos, or please call the UPWA office at 505-757-3600 and speak to Rachel or Lexy.

Our good friend and owner of the Enchanted Hideaway Lodge, Gretchen Lee passed away Sunday, June 6th. She was well known throughout the community of Navajo Dam and the San Juan River. She had the biggest heart and the softest spot in it was for dogs. She rescued dozens and often took in the ones no one else wanted. As a huge lover of dogs myself, Saint Gretchen will always occupy a soft spot in my heart. Those who knew this wonderful woman will surely miss her. Her lodge in Navajo Dam is currently open for business. Still a great place to stay, especially if you get the Stone House and share it with a few fishing buddies.

No High Spring Peak Release this year on the San Juan River. The latest Water Supply Forecast for Water Year 2010 has been issued and the April through July inflow into Navajo Lake is forecasted to be at 89% of normal. Given this forecast, there will not be a spring peak release this year. It's a little unfortunate that the river won't see a scouring this year and flush out some of the accumulated sand and silt. The upside is that there shouldn't be a dip in business for the San Juan guides. The high spring release often keeps anglers away despite the fact that fishing is very good during the event.

Yes it's back and only in Santa Fe! We are offering Tai Chi Fly Fishing classes this spring. This spring we have made a few changes in how we are building the class. Jeff English and I have built 4 one hour sessions, all built around the principals of spiral energy and balance, that will build on each previous class, as well as be of value standing alone. As you may remember me saying last time, I have noticed a considerable personal growth in confidence in and on the water, as well as a more relaxed comportment after a full day of fishing. The four classes will be run on the four in April, 2-3 pm, indoors at Jeff English' studio. We plan to limit the class size to 6 - 10 people. Advance registration is required. The cost is $20.00 per session. To make reservations or for more information, please call Doug Brown at 505-660-9906, or the High Desert Angler at 505-988-7688.

Thanks to all who made it out to the Truchas Chapter of Trout Unlimited's annual banquet on Saturday April 10th. The Guest Speaker was Brian O'Keefe. If you've seen cover photos on Field & Stream; Outdoor Life; Fly Fisherman; Fly, Rod and Reel; Fly Fishing Salt Waters; Fly and Fish Magazine; Outside Magazine and Mens Journal, then you've probably seen some of Brian O'Keefe's work. The turn out was good and the funds raised will really help the Truchas Chapter with many of their programs.

The cost is $20.00 per session. To make reservations or for more information, please call Doug Brown at 505-660-9906, or the High Desert Angler at 505-988-7688.

Who would win..... Mothra or Sculpzilla? Well come find out at the Giant Fly Sale at the High Desert Angler!! Too many patterns to mention. Most trout flies at 25 cents and tungsten beadheads at $1.oo. We just received huge shipments of new flies from Solitude, Umpqua, and our newest vendor; Idylwilde. Come in and check out the new stuff and pick up some of your old faves at a great price. Governor Richardson announced that all New Mexico State Parks will remain open during the remainder of state employee furlough days. Governor Richardson announced the change after receiving dozens of requests from New Mexico residents, local municipalities and businesses asking to keep parks open because of concerns about the negative economic impact closures could have on local economies. Listening to constituent concerns, Governor Richardson worked with State Parks and the State Personnel Office to come up with the plan that will still require State Park employees to take three remaining furlough days. Those employees who are needed to work to keep parks open on designated furlough days, will be required to take alternate furlough days. The bottom line is that Navajo Lake State Park and the San Juan River and locally, the Pecos River at Villanueva State Park will not close as scheduled and fly fishers can enjoy the resource at will.

Artists of all ages are invited to enter their original works in the contest. 2010 Big Horn Dates: June 5-13!!!! I have been going to FT. Smith MT to fish the Big Horn River below the Yellow Tail Reservoir since June of 2000. I really like this time of year on the ‘Horn, first off the crowds are minimal, and our local rivers are still in run-off. This makes this trip the perfect primer for the up coming Northern New Mexico and Southern Colorado season. Not to mention The Big Horn is quite possibly one of the top 5 tail waters on the planet. Out of 24 spots over the 8 days I will be there I know I only have one boat for two persons available. This is the kind of trip you want to do again and again and most of the returning anglers have been going with me since my second or third trip. So give a call for details and to sign up. The price stays the same, $1600 per person for four nights and three days of guided fishing. All meals, lodging and flies are included, you must get a MT fishing license and you have to get yourself there and back.

New Mexico Trout's annual Fly Fishing Conclave is on Saturday January 30th. It'll be at Sandia Prep at 532 Usuna Rd NE in Albuquerque and runs from 8am to 5pm. This year's featured guest speakers are Dave and Emily Whitlock and Rick Takahashi and Jerry Hubka. Dave, of course is a world famous author and artist and along with his wife Emily, put on a very entertaining program. Rick Takahashi and Jerry Hubka are the authors of "Modern Midges" which was just recently published. On of the best tying books I've seen in years with incredible color photos and a unique lay flat binding. The cost is $35 for members of New Mexico Trout and $45 for non-members. Lunch is included. There will be some great raffle prizes as well. For more information or to buy tickets, contact Bob Widgren at bobwidgren@msn.com or 505-884-7501, or see New Mexico Trout's website at newmexicotrout.org.

Just a heads up for anyone going to the San Juan River over the next couple of months. As part of a cost saving plan for the State of New Mexico, state employees will be have to take some unpaid days off. Unfortunately, that means that State Parks will be closed on some of the busier days on some of the places we like to fish like Navajo Lake State Park (San Juan River below Navajo Dam is within the state park) and Villanueva State Park on the Pecos River. In accordance with the furlough plan, New Mexico State Parks will not be open to the public on the following days:
• Tuesday, February 9, 2010
• Tuesday, March 2, 2010
• Tuesday, March 23, 2010

State Parks will ropen the following day at 7:00 am. State parks will remain open on all holidays as usual, including Christmas, New Years Day, Martin Luther
King, Jr. Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day. Be careful if decide to go on those days anyway, they have threatened to issue citations for trespassing.

Out of 24 spots over the 8 days I will be there I know I only have 8 to 10 spots available.

The Truchas Chapter of Trout Unlimited has announced the date for their annual banquet. It'll be at the Inn at Loretto on Saturday April 10th. The Guest Speaker will be Brian O'Keefe. A fly fisher from a very early age, Brian has traveled the world in search of good fish and for the past twenty years, great photos. He is a master level certified fly casting instructor (FFF), dynamic speaker, and a tackle rep for Scientific Anglers in Washington, Oregon and Alaska. We are very pleased he will be visitng from his home territory in Oregon to be speaker at our annual Banquet. Expect great raffle and silent auction prizes, good food and excellent company. Stay tuned: We'll have more on Banquet plans as they develop.

The Big Move is done!! We are still polishing the new spot and thanks to all of you who came to lend a hand, we couldn’t have done it with out you! Just in case you didn’t hear, we are now directly across the street from the old location. The new address is 460 Cerrillos Road. We are the Cerrillos /Sandoval split now! I will be striping the parking lot soon, but you will see there is easy parking around the building from every side, come on down a check it out!! Please park at the new location, or at a meter on Sandoval. It is important that we make every effort not to park in the old lot behind the old location, thanks!
